  • Artwork Description

    A single 99 cone rises up the canvas, the soft-serve and Flake painted with close attention and the wafer cross-hatched in convincing detail. Behind it, the background turns flat and bright in a deliberately pop register, nodding to Warhol, so the realism of the ice cream plays against the unreality of the colour field. The result balances careful observation with pure summer fun, an everyday treat given the full weight of a portrait.

  • Artist's Insight

    This was commissioned by an American whose daughter had visited London and fallen for the Mr Whippy 99 with sprinkles - they don't have them in the States, it turns out. I wanted the ice cream itself as real as I could make it, especially the cone and the cross-hatching, then a background that was pure fun, poppy and summery, almost Warhol. A serious painting of a very unserious thing.

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement.
