  • Artwork Description

    The Flake 99 is painted with hyper-real precision: the soft whip ice cream swirls, the Flake bar angled just so, the hundreds and thousands scattered across the top. The waffle cone is golden and detailed. Against this careful realism, the background is loose and expressive - sky blue on one side, a gestural brushed green on the other with vivid pink splashes breaking through. The contrast between the tight realism of the subject and the freedom of the ground gives the painting its energy. A pop art sensibility applied to the most British of summer pleasures.

  • Artist's Insight

    The Flake 99 is one of those objects that is completely specific and completely universal at the same time. Everyone in Britain knows exactly what it is and exactly what it tastes like. I painted it in a pop art background - bright, punchy colours that feel like summer - and I painted the ice cream itself as carefully as I could. It's a fun painting for the kitchen, or for anyone who loves summer and nostalgia in equal measure.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
