  • Artwork Description

    Johny's most viscerally energetic sailing canvas places the viewer directly in the path of an oncoming boat. A large red spinnaker fills the upper half of the composition, the bow carving through churning white water below. The sky - painted with rollers, sponges and the backs of spoons - is moody white and grey with touches of turquoise in the distance. The mixing of oil and acrylic in liquid form creates the white horses on the waves: unpredictable, alive, impossible to repeat. The painting's stated purpose is to make you feel seasick, and it is entirely successful.

  • Artist's Insight

    I painted this to be dramatic - a boat coming straight at you with a big red spinnaker. The ocean is rough and wild. The sky is coming in. I used rollers and sponges, the backs of spoons, palette knives. And then that technique of mixing oil and acrylic in liquid form to create the white horses on the waves - you can guide it but not control it. I wanted this painting to make you feel a little seasick. That was the intention from the start. I think it works.

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
