Mensun Bound stands on the ice beside the ghost of Shackleton, the red hull of the Agulhas II rising behind them, as a submersible far below relays the first photographs of the Endurance at rest on the Weddell Sea floor.

  • Artwork Description

Two figures hold the foreground against a charcoal-grey expanse of ice, rendered almost in monochrome but for a flash of colour in the jacket at Mensun Bound's shoulder and the deep red bulk of the icebreaker looming behind. The ice beneath their feet carries pencilled coordinates - 68°42'21"S, 52°19'41"W - marking the wreck's exact position below. The palette stays cold and restrained, the red hull the single warm note in an otherwise wintry field, and the two figures - one living, one long dead - stand close enough to suggest quiet conversation.

  • Artist's Insight

I've wanted to paint this moment since Mensun's search began. Ten years looking for a ship at the bottom of the world - I wanted the painting to hold both the science and the strangeness of it, a submersible sending back photographs while, on the ice above, an old ghost waits with an answer already known. Putting Shackleton beside Mensun wasn't about drama. It felt true. Nobody else in that search party could have understood what it meant to finally find her the way those two would - one living, one watching from wherever the dead go to wait.
