  • Artwork Description

    The viewer stands behind seven figures on a snow-covered shore, their backs turned, arms raised towards a small boat approaching across a still grey sea. Features are indistinct, silhouettes heavy - yet the emotion is unmistakable. Thick, textured whites and greys push the icy foreground forward; dark rocks emerge through snow; the rescue boat is small and distant, cutting steadily through cold water. The sky is rain-laden, swept in desaturated tones. After four months surviving on seal meat and sheer will, salvation has finally arrived. Midnight renders the moment with extraordinary restraint.

  • Artist's Insight

    Even without faces, you can feel the relief. They've been waiting four months - for food, for hope, for news. This moment was everything. I placed the viewer behind the men deliberately - you don't need to see their faces. The raised arms, the stance, the small boat in the distance. It's the most human moment in the entire story, and I wanted the stillness of the sea to carry the weight of what they'd endured.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
