  • Artwork Description

    Johny's tall, narrow canvas gives the figure room to own it. A woman in a wide-brimmed hat and oversized sunglasses stands at the water's edge, her body constructed from bold, shifting planes of terracotta, rose, cobalt and ochre - more jazz than anatomy. The beach behind her reads as pure colour: white sand, flat cerulean sea, a single palm frond cutting in from the left, a strip of sunset orange at the horizon. Playful, graphic and painted with absolute conviction.

  • Artist's Insight

    I painted Gangster Beach early on and it still makes me happy. It's a Caribbean scene but I wasn't interested in making it look like a photograph. The figure is built up from colour blocks rather than careful line - she's confident, she knows the beach is hers. The hat is doing a lot of the work. I wanted something that felt stylish without being serious, joyful without being sentimental. It's a painting that knows it's having a good time.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
