  • Artwork Description

    Towering ramparts of ice, painted in sweeping abstract strokes of turquoise, glacier blue and frosted grey, dominate the foreground like frozen cathedrals. Between them the Endurance rests — rendered in muted greys and sepia that evoke an old century photograph. Her masts are defined, yet the ship feels distant, already part of legend. The sky above is soft and subdued: pale arctic blue dissolving into washes of pink. The atmosphere is eerie and profoundly still. Every element reinforces the same truth: the ship is already lost. Nature has sealed her fate.

  • Artist's Insight

    Endurance became a monument in the ice. A ship waiting for the inevitable. I wanted her final resting place — before she sank - to feel suspended, silent and eternal. She never left this position apart from going down to the bottom of the ocean, 3,000 metres below. The ice in the foreground is painted in broad, abstract strokes - ancient, compressed, indifferent. The ship, by contrast, has an almost photographic clarity, which only deepens the sense that she is already history.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
