Glastonbury - In the Summertime

Glastonbury - In the Summertime

by Johny Midnight

  • Artwork Description

This is a painting about what it feels like to be inside a crowd at its happiest. The composition pushes forward from a blurred mass of festival-goers in the background - impressionistic suggestions of thousands of people - into the sharp, specific faces and hats of individuals in the foreground. Festival hats of every kind. Arms raised. Every age and every type of person is here. The palette holds nothing back: reds, blues, oranges, hot pinks, splashes of acrylic landing across the canvas like confetti. The background becomes sky and light. There is no single subject. The subject is the whole thing - the noise, the heat, the belonging.

  • Artist's Insight

I wanted to make a painting that you could feel rather than just look at. Festivals are about being part of something larger than yourself and I tried to build that into the structure of the composition - you start with the crowd as a mass and as you move toward the canvas you find individuals, characters, specific moments. No holding back on the colour. That would have been dishonest. It is just one big party and the painting should feel like one.
