  • Artwork Description

The moment of victory: Chris Hoy, red helmet unmistakable, punches the air on the banked velodrome track. The Olympic rings are visible on the polished wooden floor below him. The crowd fills the upper canvas in an explosion of mosaic colour - each spectator a patch of vivid paint, the collective roar rendered as pure chromatic energy. Behind Hoy, rival riders blur into abstraction, their speed reducing them to smeared shapes. It is a painting about the singular clarity of winning: one figure, sharp and triumphant, against a world that has blurred at the velocity of history.

  • Artist's Insight

I was at the London 2012 Olympics and the atmosphere inside the velodrome was extraordinary. Chris Hoy winning was one of those moments where the whole building just erupted. I painted the crowd as mosaic tiles - little blocks of colour - because that's what a crowd feels like when it's making that kind of noise. It's not individual people, it's a collective force. The other cyclists behind Hoy blur because at that speed they almost disappear. He was the only thing that mattered in that moment.
