  • Artwork Description

Two children balance carefully along a fallen tree trunk in the foreground, their bright winter coats - red and green - glowing against the cool greys and blues of the frozen pond behind. Bare trees frame the composition, branches stretching into a misted sky that suggests the hush of late December. The subdued palette reinforces the stillness of the day, while subtle textures in the sky and water soften the mood into something impressionistic and tender. The children are the emotional centre: their balancing act becoming symbolic - adventure unfolding within the simplicity of a winter walk. Though Boxing Day brings families to the Common, the focus remains intimate, isolating one playful moment within a vast and quiet landscape.

  • Artist's Insight

Boxing Day morning on Wimbledon Common is one of those rare occasions when London empties out and the parks fill up instead. These two children balanced on the log as if it was the most serious thing in the world. I was drawn to that - the way children transform an ordinary fallen tree into an expedition. I kept the surrounding landscape muted and cool so all the warmth and energy comes from their coats. The painting is really about imagination more than place: that capacity children have to turn any environment into an adventure.
