  • Artwork Description

    Graham Bell - Britain's foremost downhill skier and now the face of Ski Sunday - is captured in full competitive flight on the Hahnenkamm, one of the fastest and most unforgiving courses on the World Cup circuit. His GB racing suit flashes red, white and blue; his distinctive yellow skis cut sharply through the textured snow beneath. The background bursts into geometric blocks of rich marine blue and turquoise, lending a bold, almost cubist energy that amplifies the sensation of speed. The whole canvas vibrates with 75mph commitment.

  • Artist's Insight

    I painted this as a tribute to one of Britain's most iconic skiers. I wasn't going for strict realism. I wanted the feeling of speed, the chaos of snow flying, the sensation of watching a racer tear past at close range. The cubist background came from that - trying to fracture the landscape the way speed fractures your perception of it.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
