Grey Power Station

Grey Power Station

by Johny Midnight

The only drawing in the Battersea collection - charcoal and pencil on paper capturing the power station as a live architectural sketch. No colour, no drama; just structure, atmosphere and the quiet observation of a landmark seen anew.

Limited edition fine art prints, hand-signed and numbered by the artist. Once the edition is sold out, it will not be reproduced.

  • Artwork Description

Rendered in soft greys, muted mauves and layered charcoal, the power station is presented as a living sketch rather than a finished monument. Background and foreground blend seamlessly into one another, creating an atmospheric stillness where the building appears to emerge from mist. The structure is defined through loose architectural lines, with subtle indications of scaffolding, cranes and structural detail - pencil marks remaining visible, giving the work an unfinished, immediate quality as though captured in a moment of quiet observation. Reflections on the Thames are suggested rather than fully described, echoing the restrained tonal palette throughout.

  • Artist's Insight

This was the first time I ever drew the power station rather than painted it. I wanted it to feel like a live sketch - something quiet, observational and honest. No colour, no drama, just structure, atmosphere and time. I've spent years painting Battersea with every colour I could find, so returning to charcoal and pencil felt almost meditative. There's a vulnerability to drawing that painting doesn't always have - every mark is exposed, nothing is hidden under layers. In a way, this is the most direct relationship I've ever had with the building as a subject.
