Power Station 55
Power Station 55
by Johny Midnight
One of the most colour-saturated works in the collection. Oil, acrylic and spray paint collide to create organic cloud textures impossible to replicate by brush, as Battersea floats between sky and Thames in fluorescent orange and deep magenta.

Artwork Description
The sky is built from layers of oil, acrylic and spray paint allowed to react naturally - as oil breaks through acrylic, organic unpredictable textures emerge, creating wispy cloud forms impossible to replicate with a brush. The power station is constructed with heavy palette knife work, brickwork bursting forward in bright fluorescent orange contrasted by deep magenta shadow areas. Chimney stacks rise in soft beiges and whites edged with subtle pinks. Foreground, background and reflection dissolve into one another, removing any clear boundary between sky, Thames and city - the power station appearing to float within its own atmosphere.

Artist's Insight
This one was about letting the materials fight back. When oil and acrylic collide, you get marks you can't plan. I wanted the power station to feel suspended - not sitting on the Thames, not sitting in the sky, but existing somewhere in between. The spray paint adds a softness that palette knife work alone can't achieve, and when the oil breaks through the acrylic layer it creates these cloud formations that feel almost biological. There's not a single colour I haven't used in this painting. It was an experiment in letting everything in, all at once.
