  • Artwork Description

    An elephant walks through a landscape assembled from thick lumps of palette paint and bright, energetic marks. Blocks of yellow resolve into the leaves of savannah trees, giving a loose abstract field just enough structure to read as place. The palette is warm and lively, the surface heavily textured, and the animal sits comfortably within the disorder around it - a calm figure in a deliberately chaotic, colourful world.

  • Artist's Insight

    This started as complete abstraction, thick pieces of paint lifted straight off the palette and stuck to the canvas, then more added to keep it vibrant and funky and interesting. I never decide what a painting will be until I have turned it round a few times. Here I spotted a landscape, turned the big splodges of yellow into leaves on a savannah, and at that point knew an elephant would suit it. Beautiful chaos, really.

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
