  • Artwork Description

Johny's largest sailing canvas takes its subject from a passage he made across the Caribbean between St Lucia and Martinique - a schooner that overtook him halfway across the open ocean. The painting is built from oil and acrylic applied together, the chemistry of the two mediums producing the distinctive marbling in the sky and the high-contrast movement of the water. The vessel is clearly read yet abstractly rendered, the masts and hull sketched against a sky of dark, swirling pale tones. It is dramatic without being decorative.

  • Artist's Insight

This painting came out of a sailing trip from St Lucia to Martinique. Halfway across, this incredible vintage schooner appeared and sailed straight past us - the speed and scale of it was astonishing. I wanted to capture that feeling. I use a technique of mixing oil and acrylic in liquid form, which creates this unpredictable marbling in the sky and in the water. You can guide it, but never fully control it - and that's what makes the painting feel alive. It's abstract but you can absolutely read the boat.
