  • Artwork Description

    Johny builds a canvas that works like memory - simultaneous, non-linear, held together by feeling rather than sequence. A serene central figure stands among layered fragments of tropical experience: a hummingbird in iridescent blue-green, a chameleon, a crimson rose, white orchids, a glass on a black tree, pelicans, blue-sky coastal light. Cerulean, saffron and ochre carry the heat of the Caribbean while cooler passages suggest India. It is a large, generous work: the more time you spend in it, the more it gives.

  • Artist's Insight

    This painting is about the way travel lives in your memory - not as a sequence of events but all at once, layered. I was thinking about journeys from India to the Caribbean: the light, the wildlife, the colour of the sea. I put them together the way you'd hold them in your mind on the way home. The central figure is peaceful, taking it all in. I wanted the painting to feel like that - calm inside the abundance.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
