  • Artwork Description

    This large, brooding painting plunges into the raw side of the mountains. Three skiers occupy a steep glacial face: one pushes through the foreground, one hovers on the edge of commitment midway, and a third - already a distant figure - has made their choice and gone. The sky is heavy grey, the mountain barely distinguished from cloud. Teal ice shadows bleed through the broken white surface. The figures emerge from the terrain rather than standing apart from it. Backcountry skiing on the Argentière Glacier - serious, exposed, entirely without margin.

  • Artist's Insight

    That moment on the mountain when your brain says: Holy crap. Here we go. The figures push through an almost abstract wall of snow and ice, sculpted out of the glacier itself. I always wanted the scale and isolation to carry both the thrill and the slightly ridiculous bravery of off-piste skiing - the humour and the genuine consequence sitting right alongside each other.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
