  • Artwork Description

    An adult and child make their way back from the slopes, skis resting over their right shoulders in identical fashion. The mirrored posture is the painting's quiet heart - the child unconsciously echoing the adult, step for step, shoulder for shoulder. Footsteps trail behind them in the snow, giving a gentle sense of movement and the day receding. The background is a soft wash of misty grey and white, with snow-laden trees in the middle distance and faint mountain outlines barely breaking through the haze. The figures are near-monochrome, with just touches of light catching their backs.

  • Artist's Insight

    I painted this in 2009, inspired by the simple joy of skiing with family. For me, this painting is less about the mountains themselves and more about the moments shared along the way - the cold cheeks, tired legs, the little hand slipping into yours, and the promise of warmth indoors. The mirrored posture wasn't planned. It just appeared as I painted, and it said everything.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
