Icy Cold at 3900 Metres
Icy Cold at 3900 Metres
by Johny Midnight
Not a single moment - an entire day of extreme alpine weather compressed into one canvas. Greys, charcoals, and sudden bursts of red and orange across the Aiguille du Midi at 3,900 metres.
Limited edition fine art prints, hand-signed and numbered by the artist. Once the edition is sold out, it will not be reproduced.

Artwork Description
This painting is a dramatic, abstract interpretation of the Aiguille du Midi. The composition is built from layered planes of paint rather than precise detail, evoking scale, altitude, and shifting conditions. The sky is flat and expansive, painted in dense greys and muted purples applied with broad roller strokes, suggesting cloud cover and the oppressive stillness of extreme altitude. Mountain forms cut sharply through the canvas - some peaks crowned with crisp, icy whites for early morning cold, others infused with deep reds and burnt oranges as fleeting sunset light catches rock and snow. Cooler charcoal greys and pale blues ground the scene in cold, wind, and exposure. Time and atmosphere are compressed, allowing multiple weather states to coexist within a single image.

Artist's Insight
This work was never intended to show what the mountain looks like - it is about what it feels like to spend a full day at 3,900 metres. The Aiguille du Midi is a place where conditions change dramatically from hour to hour. You might see frozen morning snow on one ridge while another face catches the last light of sunset. The abstraction allows all of those moments to exist together. The muted greys and charcoals reflect the severity of the altitude, while the red and orange accents introduce fleeting warmth - brief moments of beauty in an otherwise hostile environment. It is a painting about weather systems, time passing, and the quiet drama of high mountains.
