Island Hurricane

Island Hurricane

A tropical storm rolls into St Lucia at 4 o'clock in the afternoon. Dark green palms bend under heavy rain. Then the sky begins to clear, and light catches the water droplets on every leaf. Exhibited at the Mall Galleries, London.

  • Artwork Description

This energetic painting depicts a tropical storm rolling in over the Caribbean island of St Lucia. The foreground is dominated by richly painted palm fronds and dense tropical vegetation, applied with palette knives and rollers to create thick, directional texture capturing the weight and movement of leaves in high wind. Deep, saturated greens, near blacks, and vivid emeralds push against one another in the canopy, while rain-wet surfaces catch and throw light in unexpected directions. The sky shifts from dark, oppressive grey through to pale streaks of light, suggesting the storm is already passing - that brief, luminous moment when rain is clearing and the jungle begins to glow.

  • Artist's Insight

When I lived in the Caribbean, I resisted painting the obvious - the blue skies and white beaches. But St Lucia is full of tropical storms, and those 40-minute downpours followed by extraordinary light were something worth capturing. This painting is about that specific moment just after heavy rain, when every leaf is wet and the light starts coming back through the canopy. The dark grey sky is still there behind it all, but the jungle is already illuminating. I used palette knives and rollers throughout, building the textures of tropical foliage through physical application rather than brushwork. The aim was to give you the lush, green density of a Caribbean island - and the raw energy that comes with it.
