  • Artwork Description

    A blue-spotted giraffe occupies the lower left, looking up at a canvas-within-a-canvas showing a hand holding a hummingbird. Two small figures stand on impossible white stairs; tropical blue water and palm trees recede to one side; a bowl of exotic fruit erupts at the top; a daffodil stands in a vase; a vinyl record sits at the bottom. The composition refuses a single focal point - every area yields new detail. Rendered in Johny's surrealist collage manner, it is a painting full of favourite things, reassembled into a world that follows its own logic.

  • Artist's Insight

    This painting has so much to look at that you don't know where to look - and that is entirely the idea. You keep looking at it in many different ways. It's all my favourite things: giraffes, hummingbirds, children on staircases with their imaginations turned upside down. The giraffe is blue because why shouldn't it be? The hummingbird in the hand is incredibly beautiful to paint. The painting is bright, colourful, and designed to make you smile and wonder simultaneously.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
