Journey from Hell

Journey from Hell

by Johny Midnight

The James Caird is almost subsumed by the Southern Ocean - men crammed into a half-sunken 22-foot boat, battling walls of freezing water across 800 miles of the world's most hostile sea.

  • Artwork Description

This painting does not depict the voyage to South Georgia - it makes you feel it. The James Caird is barely visible within an explosion of white water, shredded sails and driving spray. Dark, semi-abstract figures cling to the deck, the boat half-gone beneath the waves. The palette is deep blues, slate greys and violent white - cold that registers in the body. Midnight worked not from Hurley's photographs but from imagination and emotional truth, building a composition where abstraction and realism collide to convey the full ferocity of the Drake Passage.

  • Artist's Insight

This painting came from my imagination rather than a photograph. I wanted the roughest, deepest, darkest seas imaginable - the Weddell Sea, the Drake Passage. It's about survival, about pitting yourself against the elements and feeling that chill down your spine. Twenty-seven men went to Antarctica. Twenty-seven men, plus Shackleton, all came back. This painting is part of that story - the 800-mile journey in a 22-foot boat that made the rescue possible. It's dark, moody, and I wanted it to make you feel cold.
