  • Artwork Description

    The sailboat in this canvas is barely there - its form suggested rather than stated, dissolving into the weather around it. The lower third is deep, dark Prussian blue of mid-Atlantic ocean; the upper two-thirds are a sky built with palette knives, spoon backs, rollers and aerosol - a gathering of cumulo-nimbus, abstract yet entirely recognisable. The boat gives the painting its narrative, but only just. Johny's interest throughout this collection is making you feel the weather and ocean as forces greater than any vessel upon them.

  • Artist's Insight

    I wanted to hint at the sailboat rather than paint it. Give just enough to tell you there's a boat there, and then let the sky and the ocean take over. The Prussian blue is mid-Atlantic - dark, deep, slightly terrifying. The sky is where most of the work happened: palette knives, spoons, rollers, aerosol. Cumulo-nimbus clouds gathering. You understand what you're looking at but it's completely abstract at the same time. That's what I mean by abstract on reality. Just let her fly - stop trying to control it.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
