  • Artwork Description

    Bold rectangular blocks of orange, teal, red, blue and yellow float against a white ground, intersected by strong black lines in the manner of Mondrian - yet this is no pure abstraction. A ghostly, translucent figure walks a tightrope stretched across the white space above, arms out for balance, entirely focused. Far below, two tiny figures stand watching. A red diagonal cuts across the lower half; geometric shapes cluster and disperse. The painting operates on two levels simultaneously: as pure bold abstraction, and as a meditation on the focused, forward movement required to cross impossible distances.

  • Artist's Insight

    This painting is Mondrian-inspired - the blocks of colour, the black lines, the geometry. But it has a deeper meaning. In the distance you can make out a mountain, and a figure traverses a great expanse on a tightrope. The painting is designed to make you think and to wonder. Life is the tightrope. Keep your balance, keep moving forward, and you will make it. Sometimes I feel an image needs to carry a message, and sometimes I just follow the paint. This was somewhere between the two.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
