King and Queen

King and Queen

by Johny Midnight

The Aiguille du Midi and Les Drus placed side by side - not how they sit in reality, but how they live in Johny's head. Haunting, stripped back, and quietly dominant. Two mountains earning their titles.

Limited edition fine art prints, hand-signed and numbered by the artist. Once the edition is sold out, it will not be reproduced.

  • Artwork Description

This large-scale abstract mountain painting depicts the Aiguille du Midi and Les Drus, two dominant peaks of the Chamonix Valley. In reality these mountains sit far apart, but Johny deliberately pulls them together - elevating them as equals, standing like sentinels in a frozen landscape. The palette is restrained and atmospheric. Cool greys and soft blues form the background, creating a sense of distance and cold air. As the eye moves forward, warmer beige and pink tones appear on the rock faces, suggesting fleeting sunlight catching the stone. The mountains emerge through mist and abstraction rather than sharp detail, giving the painting a haunting, almost mythic quality.

  • Artist's Insight

I have spent years skiing and living around Chamonix, and these two mountains have always loomed largest for me. I know full well they do not sit side by side, but realism was not the point here. I wanted both of my mountains in one frame - the ones that have watched over countless days on the slopes, early starts, bad decisions, good decisions, and long waits for weather windows to clear. King and Queen is me tipping my hat to the mountains that keep you humble. This painting strips the scene back to atmosphere and feeling. It is about how the mountains feel on a cold, quiet day, not how they photograph.
