  • Artwork Description

Set at Tooting Bec Lido, this painting depicts two female swimmers in period bathing costumes that firmly place the scene in the early 20th century, paying homage to the lido's opening in 1914. The style is deliberately bold and graphic - inspired by 1920s and 1930s screen prints and posters, with flat colour and confident outlines. One woman lowers herself carefully into the pool, gripping the handrail on the steps. The other sits casually at the pool's edge, watching with quiet solidarity. Behind them, just six of the iconic coloured changing cabins appear, simplified and bright. The foliage is treated with flat, graphic texture, reinforcing the vintage aesthetic throughout.

  • Artist's Insight

I wanted to paint the swimmers themselves for once - the people who keep coming back year after year regardless of the temperature. There's something heroic about them. The 1920s screen-print style felt right because the lido was built in 1914, and I wanted to acknowledge that heritage in the visual language of the painting. The two women become archetypes rather than portraits: one about to commit to the cold water, one watching and perhaps about to follow. It's a painting about the small, repeated acts of bravery that define lido culture. Cheerful, affectionate and completely specific to this place.
