  • Artwork Description

    A single rider emerges fully rendered from the chaos of the passing peloton - the others dissolve into abstract, Mondrian-esque blocks of colour and form. Behind the riders, the village watches: old stone buildings, spectators lining the route, mountains beyond. The composition captures what it actually feels like to watch the Tour pass - the blur of speed, the one face or jersey you can hold onto, and the rest gone in a second. Bright, bold and kinetic, it celebrates the race as spectacle: colour, noise and collective joy flooding a sleepy mountain town.

  • Artist's Insight

    I was thinking about what it's actually like to stand on a mountain road and watch the Tour de France go by. It's over in seconds. You barely have time to process what you've seen. One rider you can focus on - maybe one jersey you recognise - and the rest are gone. I wanted to paint that experience. The abstract riders behind the lead figure are like a Mondrian - blocks of colour, shapes, fragments. The village in the background is the France I love: quiet, old, suddenly full of noise and colour.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
