Lee Ho

Lee Ho

by Johny Midnight

A sailing painting with no sailboat. The viewer occupies the deck, looking back over a wake of white foam and churned ocean. An entirely abstract seascape where the title alone tells you where you are.

Limited edition fine art prints, hand-signed and numbered by the artist. Once the edition is sold out, it will not be reproduced.

  • Artwork Description

Johny's most conceptually spare sailing canvas removes the subject entirely: there is no boat. Instead, the viewer is placed on the water, looking back at the ocean from where they have come. The wake - suggested by flowing lines of white foam in mixed media - traces the vessel's absence across a deep field of Prussian blue and turquoise. Oil and acrylic are worked together to create patterns that resist control, generating a surface of genuine originality. Without the painting's title, you might read this as pure abstraction. With it, you are immediately on the water.

  • Artist's Insight

I wanted to make a sailing painting that had no sailboat in it. The idea is that you are on the boat - you've tacked, you've turned, and now you're looking back at the water you've just crossed. What you see is the wash, the wake, the foam. Without the title, it's completely abstract. With it, you're at sea. I use oil and acrylic together to create the chemistry - the patterns they make when mixed in liquid form are hard to control, but that unpredictability is where the painting lives.
