Les Drus Rouge

Les Drus Rouge

by Johny Midnight

Overwhelmingly red. Les Drus after an earthquake exposed raw, luminous granite in the Chamonix Valley - and Johny reacted with emotion rather than restraint. Crimson, gold, and electric blue. The mountain, wounded and still standing.

Limited edition fine art prints, hand-signed and numbered by the artist. Once the edition is sold out, it will not be reproduced.

  • Artwork Description

This abstract alpine painting focuses on Les Drus, one of the most dramatic rock formations in the Chamonix Valley. The composition is dominated by deep reds, crimson tones, and molten-looking textures, punctuated by flashes of gold and streaks of electric blue. The central peak rises sharply through a fractured atmosphere, its surface scraped and scarred with thick, expressive paint. The red tones feel volcanic - almost violent - while the cooler blues and whites hint at ice, altitude, and lingering snow in shadowed crevasses. This contrast gives the painting a sense of tension: heat versus cold, stability versus collapse. Johny presents the mountain as something alive - raw rock freshly exposed, glowing as sunlight catches newly revealed granite.

  • Artist's Insight

My fascination with the Drus took on a new edge after an earthquake shook the Chamonix Valley and huge slabs of rock fell away from the mountain. When those inner faces were exposed, the granite was startling - clean, reflective, and almost luminous when hit by sunlight. That moment stuck with me. Les Drus Rouge is not about snow, skiing, or postcard views. It is me reacting to nature reminding everyone who is really in charge. The red is not decorative - it is emotional. It is danger, heat, impact, and awe. I have always loved the Drus, but this painting comes from seeing it wounded, altered, and still standing.
