  • Artwork Description

    A blue whale and her calf hang together in deep, dark water, their great forms filling a tall canvas. Light filters from above onto the pair, the scale immense but the mood tender, all the emphasis on the closeness between adult and young. Deep blues and soft surface light give the sense of vast ocean pressing in around a quiet, intimate moment - two enormous creatures made to feel gentle.

  • Artist's Insight

    This belongs to my nautical series - the first was Prince of Wales, a single blue whale, and this one, a mother and calf. When I lived in the Caribbean we spent time whale-spotting, and a few times these creatures came right up beside the boat. It was one of the best experiences of my life. I hope the painting carries some of how awe-inspired I was, standing that close to something so vast and so calm.

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham.
