  • Artwork Description

This canvas brings together the full arc of the Endurance story across more than a century. Above the waterline: the original ship under sail, the SA Agulhas II breaking Antarctic ice, figures hauling gear across the floe, and the portrait of Mensun Bound - the marine archaeologist who along with the team on the Agulhas 11  found the wreck in March 2022. Below the waterline: the reserved hull resting 3,000 metres down, its wheelhouse and anchors still intact, and Shackleton's own portrait emerging from the deep. A painting born from the artist's personal connection to Bound, it merges historical record with imaginative vision.

  • Artist's Insight

When the Endurance was found in March 2022, I was watching the news and wondering whether Mensun Bound - a marine archaeologist I'd met years earlier - had been involved. The next day, his wife contacted the gallery to discuss a commission. That conversation started a year of immersion in this story. I wanted this painting to hold everything - the original expedition, the discovery, the men who made it possible. Mensun came to the gallery and spoke publicly about the find. That he values this work is something I hold with great pride.
