Artwork Description
This large-scale commission depicts the Mer de Glace, the glacier descending from Mont Blanc and one of the great off-piste ski runs of the Alps. The sky moves from green through grey with touches of purple applied by roller - an unconventional choice that creates charged atmospheric electricity above the mountain scene. The background mountains are rendered in deep Prussian blue establishing distance and scale, while closer rock faces are painted in vibrant oranges, magentas, and reds - a fierce contrast that drives the eye across the composition. The glacier itself is created using oil and acrylic in combination, the two materials forming water droplets and abstract patterns that suggest movement, making visible the fact that this is a living, shifting body of ice.

Artist's Insight
The Mer de Glace is one of those places that changes how you think about time. It is enormous, ancient, and noticeably smaller every year. I have skied it many times - 18 kilometres, entirely off-piste - and the scale of the glacier never becomes ordinary. This commission invited me to go further with colour and abstraction than I usually allow myself. The green sky was deliberate - it is not what you see, but it is how it feels when the light is strange and the weather is shifting over that kind of landscape. The oil and acrylic glacier was about making the ice feel active. A glacier is not a static object. It moves.
