  • Artwork Description

A single telemark skier stands at the edge of a descent, body language caught between confidence and doubt. His stance is considered rather than panicked - poles planted, skis edging downhill, the slope dropping away below. The figure is rendered in loose black and white with subtle flashes of turquoise in his clothing. The background is soft and atmospheric, distant mountain forms barely emerging from grey mist. The foreground is heavily textured with thick, scraped white paint and pale turquoise - compacted snow, ice, and the particular quality of terrain that earns its title.

  • Artist's Insight

Merde is the French equivalent of a sharp intake of breath before doing something slightly mad. This painting is that exact thought - the one you have just before you drop in. It's not panic; it's the realisation that your confidence is about to be tested by the slope. Inspired by the Chamonix Valley, where moments like this are part of the daily rhythm.
