  • Artwork Description

    A lone snowboarder crouches at the edge of a steep descent, body angled forward but not yet committed. His green jacket and blue salopettes are the only colour in the near-monochrome composition, standing out against the pale sky and heavily textured foreground of white and turquoise - ice beneath fresh snow. The background dissolves into soft grey, mountains barely visible, height implied rather than shown. The companion piece to Merde 1: different equipment, same thought.

  • Artist's Insight

    This came from exactly the same place as Merde 1 - that instant when the run is steeper than expected. Switching from skis to a snowboard felt like the natural second part. Different equipment, same thought process. The word merde still covers it perfectly.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
