  • Artwork Description

    The final painting in the Merde series returns to the skier, this time on a slope that offers little ambiguity. The figure stands at the lip of a near-vertical descent, skis angled downhill into space, body weight held back in the unmistakable posture of someone reconsidering. Mostly black and white, with subtle colour in the salopettes, the figure sits within a heavily worked foreground of thick white paint and pale turquoise ice tones. A faint touch of winter light breaks through the grey, murky background - not enough to reassure, just enough to illuminate what lies ahead.

  • Artist's Insight

    This series came from skiing places where you don't really get a second chance. Merde 3 is that moment when your head knows what's coming before your body is ready to follow. The word merde tends to surface naturally at this point. All three paintings - different people, different disciplines - arrive at the same thought.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
