  • Artwork Description

    Figures built from blocks and splashes of neon colour - pink, yellow, green, teal - stand and move across a dark, richly textured lower canvas. Above them, a luminous sphere glows blue-white at its centre, ringed by yellow and dissolving into purple, brown and black. The sky surrounding it is a deep, complex field of poured, splattered and layered paint. Whether the figures dance, commune, or simply exist together is left open. The painting has the energy of a festival, the mystery of a mythological gathering, and the visual intensity of pure abstract expressionism.

  • Artist's Insight

    This is pure abstract, and yet the figures are quite understandable - built from blocks of colour. Are they dancing? Partying? The background is a mixture of abstract shapes and colours, and perhaps a sphere or a moon is descending the dark night sky. It could be a festival or a wild utopian landscape. It's your choice. I never want to close down a painting's meaning - I want to open it up. This is one of my largest and most complete abstract works.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
