  • Artwork Description

The scene is set at the top of the world's highest skiable cable car, on the ridge descending from the Aiguille du Midi toward the Mer de Glace and the Vallée Blanche. A line of silhouetted tourers moves carefully along the crest - small, purposeful, almost ant-like against the vast sweep of mountain and cloud below. The sky is a cool turquoise-blue, calm and clear, giving the scene a deceptive serenity. The valley beneath is drowned in mist, depth rendered in pale grey and blue bands. The title captures the skier's habitual understatement of extraordinary things.

  • Artist's Insight

This is inspired by the ridge from the Aiguille du Midi down onto the Mer de Glace - often the best one-day ski run in the world, starting at over 3,800 metres. Standing there, excitement and respect exist in equal measure. The title came from the way skiers talk about big days. When everything lines up like this, a simple 'nice day for it' says everything that needs to be said.
