  • Artwork Description

    A single figure drops into a steep slope, tiny within the vast, heavily textured expanse of blue-white mountain that surrounds and nearly consumes them. The powder explodes upward as they turn, thick whites and abstract blues pushing forward from the canvas surface with real physical force. The background is deliberately loosened into abstraction - layers of blue, grey and pale ice tone that dissolve without fixing to a specific view. The skier is charcoal-dark against the white, anonymous and committed. This is a painting about joy - raw, solitary, unforgettable joy.

  • Artist's Insight

    I painted this thinking about those rare runs where everything clicks. No fear, no hesitation - just instinct. I kept the skier anonymous deliberately. It could be anyone who's ever had that run. I love that split second where the mountain lets you in, where the snow feels bottomless and the slope feels alive beneath your feet. This isn't about danger or drama. It's about joy.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
