  • Artwork Description

    Thick, heavily worked impasto builds the citadel's twin domed bell towers and the crowded rooftops beneath them, snow lying in a soft crust of white and grey across every surface. Against the cold palette, the town's façades hold surprising warmth: peach, apricot and pale yellow buildings glow through the mist, with light blues and creams picking out the shuttered windows. Bare, frost-whitened branches crowd the foreground, framing the fortified skyline beyond. Johny applies the paint thick and deliberate throughout, giving the stone and snow real weight and texture, while the sky dissolves into a soft, atmospheric grey.

  • Artist's Insight

    This is where I did my first ski season at nineteen, and the place has stayed with me since. Briançon is unlike any other resort - it's the highest city in France, a fortified citadel built between 1370 and 1395, with narrow, tall buildings that make winter bitter and summer Mediterranean. Visiting last Easter, it felt like the old town was becoming uninhabited, which stayed with me while I painted. I wanted the heavy, thick paint to hold onto that cold, grey light, and the peach and cream in the buildings to hold what I still love about the place.
