Onion

Onion

by Johny Midnight

A large onion sits on a white plate with a key pushed through its side - painted with Dalí-like precision against a dreamlike landscape of three trees and a pink sky. What does the key unlock?

  • Artwork Description

An onion, painted with extraordinary realism - its papery outer skin peeling, roots trailing from the base - sits on a white plate, a brass key pushed through its side. The key's hole suggests a lock somewhere, though none is visible. Behind, a grey-blue table opens onto a dreamlike landscape: two low hills, three stylised trees, a soft pink sky. The distance between the hyper-real foreground object and the abstracted pastoral background is pure surrealism. Inspired by Dalí, the painting invites speculation - the key, the onion, the landscape - without resolving into a single meaning.

  • Artist's Insight

This painting is taken from the work of Dalí, the Spanish surrealist, whose work I've always loved. An onion with a key stuck in it. The onion is painted almost realistically, as is the key. But the theme is surrealist - in the distance you may perhaps see the hole that the key should be going into, not the onion. There is a landscape with three trees behind, quite stylistic. It's a mixture of realism and the slightly abstract. A painting that asks questions rather than answers them.
