Painting After Midnight

Painting After Midnight

by Johny Midnight

Many ways of painting the human figure gathered into one canvas - a Picasso-like head near the top, an almost Romanesque nude in the lower corner, and a dozen styles in between. A painting built to make you look, and keep looking.

  • Artwork Description

A single large canvas holds a catalogue of approaches to the figure, from cubist fragmentation to soft realism, set against passages of oil worked through with touches of vitrail glass paint. Styles sit side by side without resolving into one - a Picasso-influenced head above, a near-Romanesque woman below left, and shifts of method across the surface between them. The effect is a deliberate collision, less a scene than an argument about how a body can be shown.

  • Artist's Insight

It began as a way of showing my art class how many different ways there are to portray the human figure. As I worked through them, I thought it would be more interesting to put all those styles and methods into one painting rather than keep them apart. I wanted it to make you think - to move from the Picasso-style figure at the top down to the more realistic one below, and to enjoy the argument between them.
