Park Run

Park Run

by Johny Midnight

Runners stream past the café on Tooting Bec Common on a bright autumn Saturday - gold leaves overhead, red and black club vests in the pack, and a child hiding behind the big tree as the field goes by.

  • Artwork Description

The field crosses the canvas from left to right in one unbroken band, figures overlapping so densely that the pack reads as a single moving body. Johny varies the posture rather than the shape: heads tip back, shoulders drop, some stride out while others labour. Behind them the timber-framed café sits low under a rust-red roof, onlookers gathered at its windows. Autumn foliage burns yellow and orange against a thin blue sky, and a bare trunk cuts the composition in two while the low sun lays long shadows and dappled light across the grass.

  • Artist's Insight

I wanted movement more than anything - not stick figures in a line, but the tip of a head, the dip of a shoulder, one runner cruising while the next is hanging on. The red and black hooped vests belong to Herne Hill Harriers, who train up at the Tooting Bec track, so anyone local will know exactly who they are. The child behind the tree and the two dogs saying hello are there because that is what the Common is actually like on a Saturday. Look closely and you might find yourself in it.
