Pat the Cow

Pat the Cow

by Johny Midnight

A Friesian cow, painted with total conviction, looks directly out of the canvas. Wherever you stand in the room, her eyes follow. The background dissolves into soft mauve and misted field.

  • Artwork Description

Pat is the most realistically painted animal in the collection - and she knows it. The cow's black and white colouring has been rendered with care, the nose pushing forward from the canvas, the eyes holding steady and somehow following the viewer as they move. The background is the deliberate opposite: soft, misted, almost abstract, a field dissolving into soft mauve sky. The contrast is everything. The painting asks you to spend time with her, and she is entirely comfortable with that. Large format, quiet confidence. This is a portrait, not a landscape painting.

  • Artist's Insight

I paint animals the same way I paint people - looking for personality, not just likeness. Pat has a lot of personality. She came out of my interest in painting something as realistically as I can manage, which does not come naturally to me, and seeing what happens when you put that kind of conviction into a subject most people walk past in a field. The soft background was essential - I needed the painting to be calm everywhere except where she is. She does all the work.
