Artwork Description
Rendered in icy greys, soft blues and pale whites that echo early expedition photography, this canvas captures the full scale of the camp built on the drifting floe. Shackleton and Tom Crean stand in the foreground, purposeful and recognisable. Behind them the camp stretches back - makeshift shelters, salvaged supplies, men going about the essential work of survival. Small clusters tend to equipment, prepare food, gather. They appear worn but not broken. The sky above is a soft wash of white and pale blue, thin and brittle. Endurance in its purest human form.

Artist's Insight
These men carved out a home on a floating sheet of ice. I wanted the painting to feel like a faded memory - quiet, cold, but full of the spirit that kept all 28 men alive. I've given Shackleton and Tom Crean a definite presence in the foreground because leadership was everything here. But I also wanted to show the other men - going about their daily tasks, making something human out of something utterly inhuman. The camp is busy. There's a kind of grim determination in it.
