  • Artwork Description

    A single pelican dominates the canvas, rendered with realistic attention to its heavy bill and folded weight, set against a background that dissolves into abstraction. The contrast is the point: the bird is specific and observed, the world around it loose and painterly. Warm and marine in palette, the painting holds the creature at the moment between its earthbound awkwardness and the sharp control it finds over water.

  • Artist's Insight

    Ever since I was a child I could lose hours watching birds and listening to their calls. A year in the Caribbean gave me the pelicans, who took up most of my afternoons - hugging the white horses out over the surf. In the air they are incredible fighter pilots; on land they are clumsy, chunky, waddling things. I painted the bird fairly true to life and let the background go abstract around it.

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
