Pending Doom
Pending Doom
by Johny Midnight
The Endurance stands frozen in the pack ice as her crew walk away across broken ridges. The ship is sepia-still, photographic; the ice beneath their feet is alive, sculpted, relentless.

Artwork Description
The Endurance occupies the right of the canvas - dark, monochrome, already spectral, her rigging stiff with frozen snow. To the left, a line of figures walks away across the fractured floe, single-file, hunched under the weight of what they know. The foreground is rendered in thick, sculptural oils, ice ridges rising like miniature mountains under the pressure of the shifting pack. The sky behind is soft blue-grey, vast and empty. This is the moment of leaving - quiet, devastating, irrevocable. The ship will never move again under her own sail.

Artist's Insight
The moment the men realised the Endurance would never sail again. I wanted the ice to feel alive - pushing and breaking, these ridges of pressure rising up - and the ship to feel like a ghost already. The figures walking away are painted deliberately small against the scale of everything around them. The sepia treatment of the boat came from my use of Hurley's photographs as a starting point - I wanted to honour the archival quality of that record, then build the living world of ice and cold around it.
