Piña Colada

Piña Colada

by Johny Midnight

A hummingbird hangs in mid-air, wings blurred, its turquoise and violet plumage catching the light against a warm wash of yellow and green. Somewhere in the abstraction, a red jungle flower waits, heavy with nectar.

  • Artwork Description

The bird holds the centre of the board, wings spread and tail fanned in iridescent pink, its body shifting from emerald to deep turquoise. Johny sets it against an abstract field of yellow and lime, warm enough to glow without competing with the plumage. Soft red blooms surface through the background, hinting at jungle and nectar without fixing the scene to a single place. Light catches the feathers and the dark bead of the eye. For all the abstraction, the sense of hovering flight is exact - poised, weightless, alert.

  • Artist's Insight

I set out to paint something simply, unbelievably beautiful. Hummingbirds are the most extraordinary creatures - the only bird that can fly backwards, more helicopter than anything else - so I wanted every bit of shine and detail in the feathers. I chose yellow and green for the background on purpose, so no leafy green would fight with the turquoise of the plumage. The thing I cared about most was the eye: a little black button, sparkling in the sunlight. Get that right and everything else follows.
