  • Artwork Description

    Against a deep teal background, a giraffe with pink spots peers down at the viewer with weary curiosity. An impossible Escher triangle - rendered in convincing grey stone - sits at the centre, two robins perched on its impossible geometry. A magpie carries something shiny in the lower left; a large bendy pencil and a vintage pencil sharpener complete the scene, along with an artist's palette scattered with colour. Every element is painted with care and rendered slightly wrong: the pencil bends, the triangle cannot exist, the giraffe's spots are the wrong colour. A painting that is thoroughly at play.

  • Artist's Insight

    This painting takes things you think you know and slightly alters them. The giraffe has pink spots. The pencil is bendy. The Escher triangle plays with your sense of perspective. It's just a mixture of some of my favourite things - robins, magpies, a pencil sharpener - reassembled in a way that turns things on their head so you're not quite sure what's happening. Surrealism at its most playful. It's very hard to come up with something truly original, so I stopped trying and just painted the things I love.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
