Pohutukawa Tree
Pohutukawa Tree
by Johny Midnight
New Zealand's Christmas tree in full bloom on a coastal ridge. A misty bay curves below, rolling hills recede into grey. Somewhere between realism and abstraction.

Artwork Description
The pohutukawa trees cluster along the ridge in full bloom, their deep red flowers pushing against a sky that has not decided between grey and white. To the left, the faint suggestion of a beach and bay, the water silver and still. The hills roll back in layers of mist. The foreground is rich - grasses and wildflowers building up the ridge into something substantial beneath the trees. The painting sits at the border between careful observation and looser abstraction; the trees are specific, recognisable, but the background gives way to atmosphere. A New Zealand coastal scene with a particular quietness to it.

Artist's Insight
I first encountered pohutukawa trees visiting my wife's family in New Zealand and they completely stopped me. They are extraordinary - this ancient, gnarled, wind-shaped tree covered in the most brilliant red blossom, hanging off coastal cliffs in all weathers. I knew I wanted to paint them. This version is the more considered of the two - I gave them space and let the landscape breathe around them rather than pushing the colour. They earn their place on the canvas without needing to shout.
