Pohutukawa Wild

Pohutukawa Wild

by Johny Midnight

A pohutukawa blazes red against the deep blue of the Pacific. The foreground is raw rock and tundra grass. No compromises on the colour - this is New Zealand at full intensity.

  • Artwork Description

A single pohutukawa pushes up from the rocky coastal edge, its crimson blossom punching against a sky that has gone pale at the top and deep blue where it meets the sea. Below, the Pacific is rendered in dark navy and turquoise - textured, physical, the marks of a palette knife across its surface. The foreground is the rocky, yellow-tundra ground of the New Zealand coastline, raw and spare. There is nothing soft about this painting. Every element is turned up - the red of the blossom, the blue of the ocean, the rough yellow of the rock. It is abstraction in service of intensity rather than simplification.

  • Artist's Insight

This version came from wanting to paint the pohutukawa without any restraint. The first painting gave them room to breathe. This one pushes right up to them and lets the colour do whatever it wants. I was mesmerised by these trees when I visited New Zealand with my wife's family and I still am. The Pacific behind them on a clear day is a blue you genuinely cannot overstate. I did not try to.
