  • Artwork Description

    Battersea Power Station rises powerfully, its chimneys and brickwork glowing with oranges, fluorescent pinks and magentas as sunset light falls across the structure. The chimney stacks are painted in pale yellows and soft golds, catching the last warmth of the day. The expansive sky is built in large pale blue areas with sunset tones of orange and magenta drifting through. What sets this painting apart is the foreground of Lowry-inspired silhouetted figures moving across a surface that reads almost as a tiled mosaic - fragmented colour blocks suggesting reflections, paving and city rhythm beneath their feet.

  • Artist's Insight

    Big Power 11 was about scale and humanity. After years of painting Battersea as a solitary, almost mythic structure, I felt compelled to introduce people - not as individuals, but as symbols of the wider city. The Lowry-inspired figures reflect my fascination with how people pass through spaces without ever fully owning them. Battersea Power Station, in this painting, becomes a backdrop to thousands of untold stories - commuters, walkers, workers, families - all moving beneath its towering presence. It bridges architecture and life, turning the power station from an object into an environment.

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
